My Search for Lost Time in a Slice of Jewish Rye - The New York Times

The Bay's oldest kosher bakery is for sale... for $1.

That's right, I'm selling Grand Bakery for $1. If you’re passionate about Jewish baking and want to guide a Jewish bakery into the 21st Century, this could be the opportunity of a lifetime. The venerable Grand Bakery, a fixture of Bay Area Jewish life for 60 years is available for sale to the right person for the low price of $1. (Note: This gets you the brand, the customers, the recipes, and the current staff. I am also open to different arrangements on the equipment and vans, including carrying a loan.)

Why I’m selling.
I bought the bakery seven years ago from Bob Jaffe, a beloved figure in his own right. I had no experience but a calling to keep the Grand legacy alive for future generations. But life sometimes has other plans. Grand led me to Saul's Restaurant & Deli, and for the last two years I've been trying to steward both. Being part of the Jewish food community in the Bay is my greatest joy and I wish I could do it all, but I can't. It's time to pass Grand to the next set of loving hands. And since I care less about making money off the sale and more about finding the right person, my friend suggested that selling it for $1 would help get the word out. If you’re reading this, he was probably right.

What you’d be getting.
Right now the bakery is a going concern with customers across the Bay, shelves in many stores and loyal repeat customers at Synagogues and Jewish institutions. Annual turnover is about $800k, the profit is small but real, the holidays are incredibly busy—and there is a lot of upside potential. The retail distribution and network of loyal customers and community organizations, combined with 64 years of brand equity makes Grand Bakery the perfect growth platform for the right team. Not to mention that it's a privilege to serve this community.

Now back to you…
Tell me a bit about yourself, why you would want to own this bakery, what special qualifications you bring, and little bit about your vision for the next 60 years. I’ll be in touch if it feels like it could be a fit.

Shalom,
Sam Tobis
